Leaving Uluru we had a last glimpse of the rick and headed towards Kings Canyon. Once again the landscape changed as we followed the flat topped low range with red cliffs covered with green vegetation. The salt bush disappeared and there were more trees. We saw two wild camels and some honey grevilleas. The aborigines loved to suck on these to extract the sweet nectar. The soil on the edge of the road was very red. That night we free camped at Salt Creek rest area and once again we had a fire and were joined by some fellow travellers. There were lots of desert oaks in the campground. The desert oak is like Casuarina and has a very deep tap root (50 metres deep so it can tap into the underground water) They never grow close each other so they are not competing with each other for water. The young ones have the foliage close to the trunk whereas the adults have large drooping branches and are very graceful.
The next morning we made an early start to Kings Canyon and the red mountain range became more prominent.
